What a doula is...

“Doula” is the Greek word for servant.  The word has come to mean a woman experienced in childbirth that provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and just after the birth.  Essentially, a doula is a servant to the laboring mother.

 

 What a doula is not... 

As your doula I do not under any circumstances perform clinical tasks.  I will not make decisions for you, nor will I speak to the staff, in your stead, regarding matters where medical decisions are being made.

Dads and Doulas

Doulas are excellent role models for positive interaction between a mother and her partner.  The father is liberated to experience his own emotions, voice his fears, and ask for help.  Partners, too, need to be told that everything is all right and that his partner is working hard, but is fine.  They need to be reminded to eat, sit, rest, take breaks, and sometimes to breathe!  A doula can help him participate more by showing him where to massage, how to touch, how to physically support her in certain positions, and even reminding him to watch at the moment of birth.  The partner is free to be the primary support or only a spectator, depending on his personal comfort level.
